Muncie Children’s Museum: Your Playground for Learning
What makes a family outing truly unforgettable? Is it the sound of your child’s laughter as they discover something new? Or the moment when they turn to you with wide eyes and say, 'Look how cool!' The Muncie Children’s Museum is downtown’s playground for kids to learn AND have fun —right in the heart of it all.
Since 1977, this beloved institution has been a place where children and families can explore and learn together. As one of only 39 children’s museums in the country at the time of its opening, the Muncie Children’s Museum has grown to become an essential part of the community, welcoming almost 42,000 visitors annually from near and far to discover the magic of hands-on exploration.
Hands-On Fun & Learning
Step inside the museum, and you’ll quickly realize it’s not just a place to look but a place to do. Kids can splash around at the new White River-inspired water table, where they’ll learn how dams work, explore water flow, and see how this vital river shapes our local community. Or, they can climb through tunnels and marvel at the expanded train display, featuring Delaware County areas and landmarks they’ve passed like Shafer Tower and, probably their favorite, Pizza King.
Each exhibit is designed with one goal in mind: to inspire young minds. With each interaction, kids are encouraged to problem-solve, create, and imagine. And for parents? It’s a chance to engage, connect, and see the world through a child’s eyes. Exhibits like the water table aren’t just about splashing around—they’re a gateway to conversations about nature, science, and the importance of our environment.
With a membership, you receive free admission to a hands-on, educational and interactive museum for all family members living in the same household along with discounts on paid programming throughout the year.
There’s More
The museum’s mission to evolve and inspire the next generation continues with its More to Explore campaign, which includes five new exhibits. Two are already open, and next year, families can look forward to an upgraded nature area complete with an ant wall for kids to explore the wonders of the natural world.
But there’s more than just new exhibits in store. Each area will have a book nook where your little learners can explore topics related to the exhibit, along with a careers section. These additions to the museum reflect a commitment to showcasing Muncie’s story, from its local treasures to its job opportunities. It’s not just about what kids can do today—but about inspiring them to dream about what they can become tomorrow.
Why Only in Downtown?
What sets the Muncie Children’s Museum apart isn’t just its exhibits but its location. Nestled in downtown Muncie, the museum is surrounded by vibrant culture and community attractions. Its founders, a group of passionate educators and a local philanthropic sorority, chose downtown because they believed in making education accessible to everyone. That commitment still lives on today as they celebrate their 47th anniversary, inspiring our youngest minds to dive into a world of play-based learning.
